Graduation

Today was my graduation ceremony. Lots of sitting, standing and going where you’re ushered, which means the ceremony isn’t the most thrilling thing in the world, but I’m so glad I did it; I don’t think I could imagine graduating in absentia.

It was kind of fun dressing up in academic robes, which is something I’ve never had to do before. Of course, the fellows/professors and so on sitting on the stage look like an odd collection of wizards in their array of caps and gowns.

The person receiving their honorary fellowship during my ceremony was, as I mentioned a couple of days ago, Russell T Davies. For anyone who tries to watch the ceremony online, his bit is near the end, before the opera singing. To be honest, the speech introducing him was longer than the speech he gave, but seriously. How many people get someone talking about the Rift and influential gay people during their graduation?

Paraphrasing an excerpt:

Heinz recently retracted an advert for Salad Cream featuring two men kissing, suggesting that their products are only for one sexuality. In Russell T Davies, we have a man who caters for all 57 varieties.

Or something along those lines.

RTD’s message to us all was based on the fact that Cardiff regularly gets disguised as London, or Italy or the year 5 billion: you can do anything you want, anywhere you want, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

So, yes. I’m now a graduate. Where did the last three years go?

It's All Nearly Over...

The essays are done. They are printed off. Which means I've pretty much finished my degree once I've handed them in tomorrow morning. After that, I just have to wait for the results.

Real life beckons, apparently.

Job interview on Tuesday = very scary. I'd be nervous enough if it were here, but I have to go to London. I'm much more confident about getting around than I was this time last year, but it's still a bit nerve-wracking. I have no idea how long after that I'll find out if I've got the job as I know they're interviewing people on Wednesday morning, too. So I'll be heading to find a temp job in the next week or so, I think, while I keep looking for something permanent at the same time.

That's the plan, anyway.

Nearly There...

* Magical Realism - 1519 1604/1600
* Canterbury Tales II - 1436 1605/1600
* Renaissance Drama II - 1440 1592/1600

Now I just need to write the conclusions. Then I can proofread/edit this weekend. And get my Creative Writing portfolio done.

But I'm not going to do that right now. As much as I hate the sunshine, I need to get out of the house for a bit. So I shall wander into town, methinks, to get a train ticket for Tuesday, buy some paper so that I can actually print my essays, and maybe find something smart to wear to my interview.

Essays

Why, yes. I have essays due next Monday. So there may be numerous nonsense posts over the next couple of days.

Current word counts:
* Magical Realism - 1057/1600
* Canterbury Tales II - 800/1600
* Renaissance Drama II - 731/1600

And I'm still undecided about which pieces to include in my Creative Writing portfolio. And, untill I do that I can't write the 750 word commentary.

Plan of action for this afternoon? Hmm. I was kind of enjoying my CT essay, so I might try and get a couple hundred more words done.

Lack of Inspiration

Gah. For Creative Writing tomorrow, we're supposed to make up a character and do some kind of introduction for them. I am utterly lacking in inspiration for this. (Yes, I've had a week to do this, shut up.)

Old, young, male, female... even the very basic things are escaping me. I think it's because I don't have any kind of context for this created character. Normally when I write, I have somewhere to put the character, a function for them to fulfil. This time, nothing.

Okay, so this isn't the end of the world. My seminar tutor probably won't mind that I haven't done the work (the class isn't until 2pm tomorrow, so I might be able to come up with something before then) because he's a writer, i.e. total slacker.

Updated Word Counts

Right. The essays currently stand at:

Medieval Drama: 1511/1600 (needs conclusion)
Renaissance Drama: 1540/1600
Robin Hood: 2753/3200

Getting slightly stuck on things to write for the RH essay. I'm writing about the portrayal of Marian in the 2006 BBC series (AKA when knowing a fandom can have vaguely useful academic purposes). But I'm getting there. Only need another two paragraphs and a conclusion, I think. Hmm. Maybe I need another primary source... already using the ballad 'Robin Hood and Maid Marian', but perhaps I need to add something a little more, um, recent? This may call for Maid Marian and Her Merry Men for a feminist approach. Or something.

*gives up for the day*

Essay Writing: The Word Counts

The plan today? To get some proper work done on my essays. My word counts currently stand at:

Medieval Drama: 1049/1600 1270/1600
Renaissance Drama: 987/1600 1540/1600 (Basically finished. Will need to add just a bit more as it's just a little bit too much below the word count.)
Robin Hood: 2051/3200 2529/3200

Deadline: next Thursday

Should be easy enough, right? *gets distracted by shiny things*
