The Week of Much Travelling

I was looking forward to this morning - a whole week ahead of me without work. Not that I am just going to be doing nothing. Oh, no.

One of my oldest friends is getting married on Thursday, so I'm going to be away for the wedding Wednesday to Friday. The train journey is going to be about 4.5 hours, I think, so I'm debating whether or not to take my laptop with me or just stock my iPod up with audio books. My wee nano can only hold so much, though. Decisions, decisions.

Just going to a wedding can involve a lot of faff, can't it? I think I've finally decided on what I'm wearing. Don't really have to worry about my hair as I've just had it cut short again - though I did re-dye it this morning. Think I might get my eyebrows done properly while I'm in town tomorrow.

I have a to-do list all written out. Today I did none of it. Today was my I'm-not-leaving-the-flat-and-you-can't-make-me day. It's the only day I get to do that until... Sunday. Because I'm off again on Saturday to London for Dorian Gray. Marvellous.

At the moment I keep feeling like I want to write something, then I look at the blank page and that urge seems to want to shrivel up and die. The last thing I wrote was a couple of mini fics for some of my next gen RP kiddies Romeo and Roisin at [info]life_beyond and they're not exactly long and complicated. Maybe actually finally seeing HBP tomorrow might help?

Re-arranging and Writing

Well, my back seems to be better for now, even if I seem to get a little recurring pain in my hip, which is weird. Bit of general body fail at the moment, it seems. I'm contemplating buying a memory foam mattress topper for my bed; for all I know this is because of me sleeping awkwardly or something.

I treated myself to new bed linen last week, which is lovely. (I'm getting really boring, aren't I?) I haven't had any new bed stuff for nearly three years, so I thought it was time for a change. I might even get another new set next month. At the moment I seem to be on a bit of an organising/furnishing sort of kick. Currently I'm waiting to see how long it will take for [info]skitty_kat to notice that I've put a mirror in the living room. It's been languishing in a box in the hall since we moved in last year. Re-arranging the furniture in the living room is... also a possibility.

Been doing lots of lovely threads at [info]life_beyond, among other places. Love my next gen characters far too much and really need to type up the backstory ficlets that I wrote on the train a few weeks ago.

I really want to write actual fic but I can't seem to keep hold of ideas long enough to actually write them down. I've apparently lost the knack of wrangling plot bunnies.

Hmmm. Seems like I might be heading to London on Thursday. Need to make arrangements.

Tapdancing on the ceiling

My sister came to visit this weekend, which gave her a bit of a break from uni. We shopped watched far too many (musical) films and she even asked to watch the first couple of HP films, which I haven't seen for ages. Then, last night we went down to Cardiff Bay, had dinner at Pizza Express and then went to see Mary Poppins.

We had fab seats in the circle, and the show was great. Obviously different from the film, but I think it really worked well. Some amazing dancing (there's a part of me that would love to learn Supercalifragilisticexpialidocius), especially the tap dancing on the ceiling.

This afternoon I caught up on my weekend's TV - though I still need to watch QI - which means BSG and Dollhouse. Managed not to cry at BSG, huzzah! And I'm still really enjoying Dollhouse. The whole concept of it has never really squicked me like I know it has some people. Maybe I'm just odd.

And, um. I so need to use Amy Acker as a PB, don't I? So perfect, yay. I may just make icons, even though I currently don't have anywhere to use them.

Character Meme

Give me a character (and no one is off limits, whether they come from a book, a movie, television, you get the picture) and I will give you at least five facts about them according to my own personal canon. This can range from their birthday, favorite color or even their earliest memory up to what they had last night for dinner.

I only request that these be characters I know. Otherwise it will be difficult to come up with things for them.

Shopped Out

Finally went and got my hair cut today. Went for something a little bit different, but hopefully easy to manage.

And then I went shopping. Um. New pair of ankle boots, new pair of Babychams, Heroes season one and Sarah Jane Adventures series one. So I'm nicely shopped out now, I think.

Why is it that I don't go shopping very often, but when I do my card gets a bit of a workout?

Perhaps pictures sometime. Or maybe a meme...

A Big Dose of Meh

I'm in an odd sort of mood today. I don't know what it is. I'm not even doing anything in particular. Maybe I'm just sort of crashing after feeling ill all week. Basically, I ran out of my asthma inhaler for a few days, but even though I've got a new one it hasn't got into my system again yet so breathing is generally a bit painful.

So today's mood is... meh. I don't know what I want to do. I know I'm about due a proper thread at [info]road_ahead, but the question is what. Hmm. Or there's any of my other games.

On a vaguely related note, I'm missing playing Megan Jones right about now. No idea why this has popped into my head, but it's really bugging me. For a character that was kind of off the cuff she's stuck around.

I think I want to watch a film. Can't decide what. I've already done both the Doctor Horrible commentaries today...

Though thinking of films reminds me that the HSM marathon needs to be organised.

But... the line breaks...

For anyone who doesn't know, I do subtitling for TV shows.

I also like Heroes. It is cracked and sometimes I wonder why I still watch it. But still, I stick with it.

Generally, everything is fine, but scenes such as Ando and Hiro speaking in Japanese offend my subtitler sensibilities. I mean, ack. It hurts my head where they choose to put line breaks. Just... no. No, no, no. Even the guys at work agree... it's just painful.

Why is it I can overlook the crack, but not this?

Photo Meme

Ask me to take a photo of something! Anything at all, from my left foot to my fireplace to the view from my window. I shall then take the photos and post them in a new entry, because I can.

*pokes [info]wizard_love fic*

Managed to get some more written today, slowly but shortly. Even managed to join together a couple of the sections I'd actually written, which is always good. I know exactly what I've got to write now, but it's not coming particularly easily.

*pokes fic again*

If only it would write itself. Perhaps I should have a couple of drinks while I'm out tonight and then see if it's more forthcoming when I get home. Heh.

*goes back to the RPGs*

22nd Aug, 2008

So I've pretty much decided to get a new phone. Just need to decide which one, now, which isn't good as I'm Little Miss Indecision at the best of times.

Currently torn between the N95 Black or the Tocco Pink. I'm convincing myself that an iPhone is a bad idea, right? They're all so pretty! I'm never going to be able to make my mind up. Anyone want to weigh in with experiences?

Also, on a work-related note - seriously? Who watches televised poker? Gah.

Honorary Fellowship for Russell T Davies

Today, during the graduation ceremony for the department of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University, Russell T Davies received an honorary fellowship from the university. Here is the information/blurb provided in the programme (the English version):

Mr Russell T Davies OBE is the acclaimed Welsh television producer and writer renowned for spearheading the revival of the popular science-fiction television series Doctor Who and for creating its spin-off series Torchwood.

Russell was born in Swansea in 1963. A graduate of English Literature from Oxford University, he completed the BBC Director's course before becoming a TV producer. While working in the Manchester department of Children's BBC, he wrote his first full-length script in the form of the pilot for the 1991 youth science-fiction TV series Dark Season.

After moving to Granada, he served as a producer and writer on the hospital drama Children's Ward, winning a BAFTA for Best Children's Drama in 1996. During this period, he also wrote his second well-received science-fiction production, Century Falls.

Russell subsequently worked on The House of Windsor, Springhill, The Grand, and the mini-series Touching Evil before winning recognition and acclaim for his controversial award-winning gay drama, Queer as Folk. For his romantic comedy-drama Bob & Rose he received the Writer of the Year Award at the Comedy Awards; The Second Coming won the Best One-off Drama at the Broadcast Awards; and Casanova was nominated for the Press Guild Awards. He also wrote the 5-part series called Mine All Mine.

In addition to penning a book based on Dark Season, he wrote the Doctor Who novel Damaged Goods.

As well as the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood he also created The Sarah Jane Adventures featuring Sarah Jane from the show. he recently announced that he will step down as executive producer of Doctor Who, although he will write the special episodes which will replace next year's series.

In 2006 Russell was awarded the Dennis Potter Award at BAFTA for his writing services to television. Earlier this year he was awarded an OBE by the Queen for his services to drama.

Graduation

Today was my graduation ceremony. Lots of sitting, standing and going where you’re ushered, which means the ceremony isn’t the most thrilling thing in the world, but I’m so glad I did it; I don’t think I could imagine graduating in absentia.

It was kind of fun dressing up in academic robes, which is something I’ve never had to do before. Of course, the fellows/professors and so on sitting on the stage look like an odd collection of wizards in their array of caps and gowns.

The person receiving their honorary fellowship during my ceremony was, as I mentioned a couple of days ago, Russell T Davies. For anyone who tries to watch the ceremony online, his bit is near the end, before the opera singing. To be honest, the speech introducing him was longer than the speech he gave, but seriously. How many people get someone talking about the Rift and influential gay people during their graduation?

Paraphrasing an excerpt:

Heinz recently retracted an advert for Salad Cream featuring two men kissing, suggesting that their products are only for one sexuality. In Russell T Davies, we have a man who caters for all 57 varieties.

Or something along those lines.

RTD’s message to us all was based on the fact that Cardiff regularly gets disguised as London, or Italy or the year 5 billion: you can do anything you want, anywhere you want, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

So, yes. I’m now a graduate. Where did the last three years go?
