| | Subject: | Honorary Fellowship for Russell T Davies | | Time: | 05:43 pm |
|
| Today, during the graduation ceremony for the department of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University, Russell T Davies received an honorary fellowship from the university. Here is the information/blurb provided in the programme (the English version):
Mr Russell T Davies OBE is the acclaimed Welsh television producer and writer renowned for spearheading the revival of the popular science-fiction television series Doctor Who and for creating its spin-off series Torchwood.
Russell was born in Swansea in 1963. A graduate of English Literature from Oxford University, he completed the BBC Director's course before becoming a TV producer. While working in the Manchester department of Children's BBC, he wrote his first full-length script in the form of the pilot for the 1991 youth science-fiction TV series Dark Season.
After moving to Granada, he served as a producer and writer on the hospital drama Children's Ward, winning a BAFTA for Best Children's Drama in 1996. During this period, he also wrote his second well-received science-fiction production, Century Falls.
Russell subsequently worked on The House of Windsor, Springhill, The Grand, and the mini-series Touching Evil before winning recognition and acclaim for his controversial award-winning gay drama, Queer as Folk. For his romantic comedy-drama Bob & Rose he received the Writer of the Year Award at the Comedy Awards; The Second Coming won the Best One-off Drama at the Broadcast Awards; and Casanova was nominated for the Press Guild Awards. He also wrote the 5-part series called Mine All Mine.
In addition to penning a book based on Dark Season, he wrote the Doctor Who novel Damaged Goods.
As well as the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood he also created The Sarah Jane Adventures featuring Sarah Jane from the show. he recently announced that he will step down as executive producer of Doctor Who, although he will write the special episodes which will replace next year's series.
In 2006 Russell was awarded the Dennis Potter Award at BAFTA for his writing services to television. Earlier this year he was awarded an OBE by the Queen for his services to drama. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Today was my graduation ceremony. Lots of sitting, standing and going where you’re ushered, which means the ceremony isn’t the most thrilling thing in the world, but I’m so glad I did it; I don’t think I could imagine graduating in absentia.
It was kind of fun dressing up in academic robes, which is something I’ve never had to do before. Of course, the fellows/professors and so on sitting on the stage look like an odd collection of wizards in their array of caps and gowns.
The person receiving their honorary fellowship during my ceremony was, as I mentioned a couple of days ago, Russell T Davies. For anyone who tries to watch the ceremony online, his bit is near the end, before the opera singing. To be honest, the speech introducing him was longer than the speech he gave, but seriously. How many people get someone talking about the Rift and influential gay people during their graduation?
Paraphrasing an excerpt:
Heinz recently retracted an advert for Salad Cream featuring two men kissing, suggesting that their products are only for one sexuality. In Russell T Davies, we have a man who caters for all 57 varieties.
Or something along those lines.
RTD’s message to us all was based on the fact that Cardiff regularly gets disguised as London, or Italy or the year 5 billion: you can do anything you want, anywhere you want, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
So, yes. I’m now a graduate. Where did the last three years go? | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| The essays are done. They are printed off. Which means I've pretty much finished my degree once I've handed them in tomorrow morning. After that, I just have to wait for the results.
Real life beckons, apparently.
Job interview on Tuesday = very scary. I'd be nervous enough if it were here, but I have to go to London. I'm much more confident about getting around than I was this time last year, but it's still a bit nerve-wracking. I have no idea how long after that I'll find out if I've got the job as I know they're interviewing people on Wednesday morning, too. So I'll be heading to find a temp job in the next week or so, I think, while I keep looking for something permanent at the same time.
That's the plan, anyway. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| * Magical Realism - 1519 1604/1600 * Canterbury Tales II - 1436 1605/1600 * Renaissance Drama II - 1440 1592/1600
Now I just need to write the conclusions. Then I can proofread/edit this weekend. And get my Creative Writing portfolio done.
But I'm not going to do that right now. As much as I hate the sunshine, I need to get out of the house for a bit. So I shall wander into town, methinks, to get a train ticket for Tuesday, buy some paper so that I can actually print my essays, and maybe find something smart to wear to my interview.

| Today's essay updates:
* Magical Realism - 1375/1600 * Canterbury Tales II - 1217/1600 * Renaissance Drama II - 989/1600
So. Getting there slowly. Will I finish them tomorrow? I don't know. It might help if I get out of bed before 10. But, then again, it might not. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Why, yes. I have essays due next Monday. So there may be numerous nonsense posts over the next couple of days.
Current word counts: * Magical Realism - 1057/1600 * Canterbury Tales II - 800/1600 * Renaissance Drama II - 731/1600
And I'm still undecided about which pieces to include in my Creative Writing portfolio. And, untill I do that I can't write the 750 word commentary.
Plan of action for this afternoon? Hmm. I was kind of enjoying my CT essay, so I might try and get a couple hundred more words done.

| Will be back in Cardiff tomorrow!
Mostly looking forward to it, though there's nasty stuff to do like finishing the essay I've got due on Tuesday and going to see a doctor about the ongoing saga of my skin. Gah. D: Need to start applying for jobs and stuff, too, which isn't so appealing. Definitely looking forward to seeing friends again.
Seriously, in just over a month I'll be handing in the last of my essays. Meep.
Might try and do some RP this evening. A couple of my characters are complaining that I'm not doing enough with them. | comments: Leave a comment |

| My plan for the day. Let's see if I can feel vaguely productive.
Quickly finish my erotic_elves fic, trying to inject a little more smut into it. [DONE - here (LJ) and here (IJ).] Write a paragraph of my essay. Start House of the Spirits. Update HP Soc website.

| I've been home at my parent's house for just over a week now and really rather enjoying not having to think about things like food. Of course, I've been extraordinarily lazy and not done much other than sit at my laptop or watch television. I made a vague start on an essay I need to write today; I have something resembling an idea about what I want to write and I suspect it'll take on something of a feminist slant.
We went out for lunch on Sunday. Yes, it was Easter, but it was also my mother's birthday and my parent's wedding anniversary. The restaurant is lovely and we've been there before - very small and friendly, to the point where we were actually being served by the person the restaurant is named for, lol. When they brought out the desserts, the chef had piped 'Happy Birthday' onto my mum's plate in chocolate. ♥
Tonight, I plan to attempt a Percy/Alecto Carrow fic for the erotic_elves challenge, which is due by the 1st. The plot bunnies are barely nipping at the moment, though. I'm thinking something set around GoF sort of time. Hmm.
Of course, typing would be much easier if I wasn't suffering from eczema on my hands again. Grrr. | comments: Leave a comment |
